West LRT Traffic Update:
The much anticipated West LRT construction season has begun and is expected to be a factor in our daily commutes for the next three years. As part of our ongoing commitment to keep you up-to-date on news in and around our community, please note the following traffic updates:
1) Westbound Bow Trail will temporarily be reduced to two lanes from 24th St SW to 33 St SW. from 7am-3pm, effective Tuesday February 16. As of March 1, this restriction will be extended to 24 hrs per day, and is expected to cause major delays in the afternoon peak period at that time.
2) 17 Ave SW will see lane reductions between 33 Street SW and 39 Street SW, as of March 1. Turn lanes along 17 Ave in that corridor will be eliminated, however motorists will still be able to make left hand turns. Expect significant delays.
3) Beginning March 1, several road intersections outside of our community will become temporarily or permanently closed:
- 38 Street access at 17 Ave (Temporary closure)
- 39 Street access at 17 Ave (Permanent closure)
- 29 Street access at Bow Trail (Permanent closure)
4) Speed limits through all construction zones will be reduced to 50km/h for the safety and protection of commuters and construction workers.
5) The West LRT project team has implemented a new Traffic Management program to address local concerns in our community. If you see a significant traffic issue in your neighbourhood, caused by the construction process, please email us at: info@springbankhill.org and we can provide the necessary information on this process.
6) We expect the construction of the 69 Street station to begin in early spring, and will update our membership of potential delays as information becomes available.
LRT/ High School Construction:
2010 will be a significant year in the continued growth of our community, and Springborough Blvd will be the focal point of much of the infrastructure development. The majority of the West Calgary High School will soon be completely enclosed, while the third wing on the north side will begin construction. This wing will allow the school to accommodate over 1800 students once open in Sept 2011.
Meanwhile, the parkade north of the school has been put to tender, and should begin construction in the first half of 2010. The West LRT project will begin construction in early 2010, and there will be several construction sites along 17 Ave, as well as Bow Trail, beginning as early as March. The LRT route will end west of 69 Street where the Rundle College football fields currently are. Those fields will be moved to the west side of Rundle College.
Further construction will take place as the city builds an overpass of 17 Ave over Sarcee Trail to align itself with the LRT route. Confused yet? Me too.
Visit www.westlrt.ca for more details of the project, and how it will affect our community.
Restricted Parking:
Please note that the subdivision of Springborough is now a designated Restricted Parking Zone. For non-residents of this area, please review the signage along the streets to ensure that you are parked legally. We greatly appreciate your cooperation.
